We start November with “Go The Extra Mile Day”. Enxoo showed us how we can go the extra mile for your customers, but we at Skilo want everyone to reconsider how we are going the extra mile as a team leader or team player.
What is the “Extra Mile”?
The phrase “to go the extra mile” means that your service goes beyond expectations and has a positive, lasting impact on those you serve.
Interesting fact: The phrase is cited with biblical origins, apparently coined when Jesus delivered his Sermon on the Mount.
In the past, going the extra mile would have been laughable in an era where the employer was in total control; their way, or the highway. But, thanks to social media and recruitment agencies, accessibility to new job opportunities has increased dramatically. Now, because of this. Organisations have found they are competing to attract the best quality workforce – oh how the tables have turned!
Organisations are stepping up their employee benefits, giving raise to a sweeping trend of “Employee Branding” to attract and acquire talent.
It’s all very well broadcasting what benefits you can offer, but employees also want a picture into their day-to-day working life and development over time.
In one word: technology – and here’s three ways you could consider leveraging technology to achieve a long term, greater impact.
- Process Automation
No one wants to be promised these exciting … only to find that they spend most of their time carrying out menial, manual tasks.Having the right business systems in place eg. CRM – can seem so simple, but need to be implemented properly so that people won’t end up finding manual workarounds to do what they need to do.
- Employee Relations
We all like things in one place when it comes to HR communications. The frustration of sifting through emails to find that one piece of documentation we need, or not being able to submit information in a simplified way. Being able to communicate through a centralised, simplified application is a breath of fresh air for everyone. We should also have insight into entitlements, for example the long-contested matter of compensation: how has it been calculated, with what metrics? If we haven’t received the right amount, how can I dispute it?Being able to serve the employees and correct mistakes shows you value their graft to even earn that commission in the first place.
- Role reviews & performance evaluation
As Skilo outline how employees can go the extra mile by becoming accountable for their personal development, now it’s the turn of the manager.Evaluation is key to improving performance, so why is it frequently an unstructured and heavy conversation?Employees want a consistent evaluation framework, that has clear actionable insights to pursue. Laying your team a path to success goes the extra mile.
So, there you have it – how you can take actions to go the extra mile for your most valuable asset – your employees. Never lose good people through neglect, and give them a working life that will propel performance.
