It’s Stress Awareness Day, a day dedicated to reminding ourselves about stress amongst the fast-moving world we live in. Work-related stress is lethal to our functional capability and motivation – which is why this post will bring you 3 interesting facts about stress*, and then explain why we, at Skilo, are especially interested in the topic of Stress Awareness.
Causes of Stress
Stress finds its way into many aspects of our lives, particularly work, the most common causes being: workload, people issues, juggling work/life balance and lack of job security*. Although stress impacts our work noticeably by making us more error prone, it also leaks into our personal lives, causing us to be more irritable and brings about a loss of energy and motivation during the precious time with our loved ones.
The key to success is this: to have enough pressure to drive you to achieving your goals, but not to the extent it damages your ability to perform at work.
3 Stress Facts
- The term for positive stress is “Eustress’’, which is the (short-term) stress that motivates you to perform faster or better, all in all improving your execution.
- System Analysts and Software Engineers are said to be two of the least stressed professions out there (surprisingly) – looks like we chose the correct career for longevity!
- Stress is not just internal, it can show itself on the surface too; stress causes the production of sebum (AKA spot puss) and cortisol, which correlates to weight gain. A double-whammy.
HR and their Role in Combating Stress
You may ask: what’s the relevance to you – a Talent Management Platform vendor?
Taking the common sources of workplace stress, we can begin to see the importance of the HR department in setting the policy to curb the causes and effects of stress. And the first step? Empower HR.
Empowering the HR department means giving them a platform with the tools and applications to make work faster and outcomes better. To automate, is to alleviate; freeing up your HR staff for tasks that will always require the human touch.
But with a tool like Skilo, you can organise the people as a collective more effectively. Skills are matched with the most compatible role, meaning people have the best opportunity to excel at what they are naturally talented at. There is greater administrative power, for example, processing holiday requests faster when people need the time off. Overall better communication within the organisation can prevent personality clashes and mistakes from lack of communication. Performance reviews with a proper structure can point the employee in the right direction and sharpen their focus on what’s important, and get rid of what’s not from their workload.
It can’t be denied that HR has a key role in stress awareness, prevention, and cure. Help HR to help your most important asset – your people. We are all only human, after all.
